Before you buy that new printer for Christmas . . .

If you’re looking to buy yourself or someone you know a new printer for Christmas, you might want to head over to Printer.com before plunking down $70 on a printer that’ll ultimately cost you $500 in ink over 5 years.

Printer.com calculates the total cost of the printer plus the average cost for ink over 5 years, and also has a great interface in general for browsing through printer models:

At Printer.com, you can easily find and compare printers and costs of printers and cartridges over a period of five years for almost any printer. Printer.com is helping you get transparency in functionalities of printers, as well as costs of printers and cartridges, so that you can make better selections and money saving choices.

Transparency? Cost savings? Better selections?  Cool!

  1. The other part of the TCO equation is driver support. I’m sticking with HP printers because I know that I can get driver updates for years. I know many people with orphaned peripherals – especially printers – that don’t support the latest operating systems.

If you’re bothered by the outrageous cost of ink or toner, then go with remanufactured cartridges. Or just wait for a sale. I found that Costco now carries extra-extra-large HP 02 cartridges, which are a pretty good value.
