Jolicloud to compete with gOS Cloud
Just as the Netbook devices start to become popular – you know, those tiny laptops with ridiculously tiny screens and keyboards – the founder of Netvibes, Tariq Krim, announced plans to release a new software stack, named Jolicloud, to provide a streamlined OS for the Netbook platform.
Most of the Netbooks today come pre-loaded with some form of Linux, or alternatively a complete install of Windows Vista. Neither OS is highly tuned for the small form factor, making the experience overall clumsy and frustrating. Jolicloud proposes to fix this problem by offering an OS that is highly tailored to the smaller form factor of the Netbook, including support for touch-screen interfaces. The OS itself looks a lot like the iPhone OS.
This of course comes soon after the announcement by Good OS to release a similar browser-only OS dubbed “Cloud.”
The current release date according to Jolicloud’s website is sometime in 2009. Expect to see likely announcements from Microsoft regarding Windows Mobile and potentially even Google extending Android onto the Netbook platform should the popularity of Netbooks continue to expand.
