Disqus commenting system to support Facebook Connect

disqus-logo Disqus, the JavaScript-based commenting add-on for blogs and community sites, will soon be getting Facebook Connect support, allowing users to log into Disqus and post comments on blogs with their Facebook account.  The new upgrade will also allow blog owners to optionally send events back to Facebook once a user posts a comment.

The Facebook activity feeds will likely be the number one reason folks choose to implement Facebook Connect ahead of Google Friend Connect, although I can’t see a reason why most places won’t end up supporting both.

Ultimately, though, I still think that Facebook Connect will probably win, although I can’t exactly figure out why they didn’t just support OpenID and OAuth instead of writing their own authentication system.  I would guess it has something to do with laziness, perhaps.  I can’t figure how it would be to a competitive advantage for them to not offer OpenID support, but maybe someone else out there has a good theory on why.
